What is tre®?

Tension & Trauma Release Exercise (TRE®) is a revolutionary, body-based practice that helps release deeply held stress, tension, and trauma stored in the body including symptoms of PTSD. Unlike traditional approaches that rely solely on talk therapy or medication, TRE® offers a natural and effective way to restore balance to your body and mind.

Created in the 1990s by Dr. David Berceli, TRE® is built on the idea that stress, tension, and trauma are not just psychological, they are also deeply physical. Berceli, with his background in psychotherapy and bodywork, developed a series of seven simple exercises to activate the body’s innate ability to shake and release stress. This shaking mechanism, known as neurogenic tremoring, is a natural response designed to calm and rebalance the nervous system.

Traumatic events and prolonged stress create chronic pain and tension patterns in our bodies. Other symptoms may include anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive issues, PTSD, or trouble concentrating. Our bodies compensate by pulling inward to protect our core but use up much energy in the process. As a result, people living with prolonged trauma and emotional pain often report that they have no energy and cannot think clearly. TRE® is a somatic practice based on the fundamental idea—backed by research—that stress, tension, and trauma are both psychological and physical.

In a safe, supportive environment, TRE® can:

  • Release deep muscular tension

  • Reset the nervous system

  • Calm the body and mind

  • Help the body heal from trauma

Over time, as the body returns to a balanced state, you may notice benefits such as:

  • Improved sleep

  • Reduced anxiety and tension

  • Relief from physical pain

  • Enhanced focus and emotional resilience

Once you learn the practice, TRE® becomes a self-help tool you can use anytime, making it a practical and empowering way to support your health and well-being.

How Does TRE® Work?

Stress, tension, and trauma begin in the nervous system and show up in our bodies as tension, pain, or even chronic health issues. When we experience stress or fear, the body activates its natural "fight or flight" response to keep us safe. While this is a healthy survival mechanism, unresolved or ongoing stress can cause the body to stay stuck in this heightened state, storing the stress in muscles.

TRE® works by safely activating a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating to release muscular tension, calming down the nervous system and encouraging the body to return back to a state of equilibrium. The TRE® mechanism, or shaking ability, exists in all mammals and humans. It is the body’s most organic and natural way of unraveling contracted or tight stress patterns, increasing resilience, as well as reducing the charge of stress hormones and unhealthy chemical build-up, bringing the body back to homeostasis. The shaking often begins at the power center of the body, the Psoas Muscle. From this area, it reverberates throughout the entire body traveling along the spine, releasing deep chronic tension from the sacrum to the cranium.

TRE® helps the body release this built-up stress and return to balance. The process involves:

  1. Simple Exercises - A gentle sequence of stretches to activate the body's natural shaking mechanism.

  2. Neurogenic Tremors - The body begins to shake or vibrate, releasing stored tension from deep in the muscles and fascia, starting at the core and moving outward.

  3. Integration & Rest - The body and mind settle into relaxation, creating a new neural pattern of calm and balance.

This natural response generally feels pleasant and soothing, and after doing TRE®, many people report feelings of peace and well-being. TRE® is designed to be a self-help tool that, once learned, can be used independently as needed throughout one’s life; thereby, continuously supporting and promoting personal health and wellness.

Over time, with consistent practice, TRE® helps reset the nervous system, allowing you to feel more grounded, resilient, and connected to yourself.

Used by people all around the world—from parents and health professionals to first responders, CEOs, Olympic athletes, and military personnel—TRE® provides a unique body-based entry point to release muscular tension, re-regulate the nervous system, and enhance creativity and coping capacity by simply using the body’s own innate recovery reflex.

Whether you are a parent/spouse who would like more patience with your family, a victim of violence or accident, a soldier suffering with PTSD, a first responder experiencing workplace stress and hypervigilance, an athlete wanting better performance, or simply a person looking to become more resilient and just feel better about life, you can benefit from TRE®.

TRE® also provides an alternative to talk therapy because with you:

  • don’t need to talk about difficult things

  • don’t have to confront painful experiences

  • don’t have to get lost in overwhelming emotions

TRE® wakes your body up, generating new sensations and feelings, helping you to feel connected, centered and alive.

TRE® IS YOU HEALING YOU.

What to expect

Rebecca Casey, a certified TRE® provider, engages clients with simple exercises designed to bring the body to a state of fatigue, not exhaustion. Think less boot camp, more relaxation. Clients will then rest on the floor and let their body do the work for about 20 minutes. Rebecca monitors and checks in on them to ensure they’re comfortable throughout the entire session. The goal is to prepare the physical self to a place where it is ready to literally let go of trauma, tension, stress, and anxiety held deep within the body.

Participants are in control of the shaking and can stop anytime if they become uncomfortable. It’s like watching a dog shake during a loud thunderstorm, as their muscles release stressful energy. This is a natural mechanism that humans have, too. The difference is that we’ve been taught to literally hold it in.

TRE® provides many of the same benefits as yoga, mental health counseling, and massage. Therefore, it’s beneficial for releasing everyday stressors; furthermore, it’s incredibly beneficial for releasing deep-seated stress like PTSD and other types of trauma held in the body. We know the effect stress has on the body and how it makes our muscles ache, teeth clench, blood pressure increase, shoulders tense, and eyes twitch. We also know that the body holds onto stress unless it engages in activities to let it go. In short, TRE® is a way to let go.

Benefits of TRE®

Since the muscular shaking mechanism TRE® triggers is part of our natural behavior as humans, everyone can benefit from TRE®. This shaking increases the resilience of the body because it causes deep relaxation that naturally reduces stress levels. It can release emotions ranging from mild upset to severe anxiety whether it is caused by work stress, excessive worry, conflict in relationships, physical stresses or trauma.
